Unrepresentative Policy - Climate Change Series #4
If you have been following along with this climate series, you know by now that our government’s activities and policies are profoundly out of step with the views of the American public. Let’s take a look this week, at what kinds of energy investment Americans want our government and utilities to make, and contrast that with the “all-of-the-above” strategy favored by our leaders:
Do you favor or oppose expanding each energy source?
Solar panels: 89% FAVOR
Wind Turbines: 83% FAVOR
Fracking, Coal Mining, Offshore Drilling, Nuclear: All >50% OPPOSE
Almost 9 in 10 Americans, want us to expand our use of solar panels and wind turbines while over half the country is against more fossil-fuel development! That is almost unbelievable. What is perhaps even more amazing, is that majorities of Republicans and Independents
, who were are constantly assured can’t stand government investment in clean energy, would vote against politicianswho oppose solar panels!
What’s more, 76% of our population is in favor of “spending more government money on developing solar and wind power.” These aren’t just overwhelming majorities, this is near universal consensus!
And yet…you all know the story. Our government is aggressively propping up uneconomic fossil fuel investments, and denigrating the idea of clean, renewable energy, in defiance of both the will of the people, and basic fiscal responsibility. This is unconscionable, and is only possible because of the death-grip the fossil fuel industry has on our political system. It seems their view, and those of their sycophantic vassals, is that there is an orgy of money to be made right now, and if the consequence of that activity is the wholesale destruction of our global society, well that is someone else’s problem.
Be we, the American people disagree! Our demands for a cleaner environment and investment in renewable technology couldn’t be clearer, and we are done tolerating corrupt politicians who sell our future to wealthy oligarchs and special interests.
