It Should NOT Be Hobson's Choice/We Need and Deserve Better

Nothing is written in stone, there is still plenty of time for the nefarious plans and skullduggery of the Republican party to sink Joe Biden or steal this election for their party. All that being said, I wouldn't want to be Donald Trump right now. Covid-19 cases our surging, especially in states where his insane anti-mask rhetoric has been most fervently adopted. The economy is in tatters, despite the delusions of the investor class, who, drunk off cheap Fed money can't even recognize the danger and desperation sweeping the nation. And the largest civil rights movement, perhaps in history is stirring in the streets, demanding justice. Donald Trump, in the midst of all this, has proven uniquely incompetent, myopic and maniacally counter-productive, both in this behior and his utter inability to change. It's this last part that is the most incredible. During an election year, when he had every incentive to help the people, even if only to cynically maintain his own power, he has shown that he simple cannot rise to the occasion, even to save himself. So he reaches ever more frequently to the only trick he still knows, spew hateful, racist vitriol, while always claiming to be the victim. It's the strategy of a loser and a coward. The American people know it too. They know Trump is a failure and a loser. A man who couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag, let alone a global pandemic. This would be bad enough, if tens of millions hadn't lost their jobs, and with it their health insurance. It would be bad enough if rent moratoriums weren't expiring next month, nearly simultaneously with unemployment benefits. It would be bad enough if following health guidelines hadn't become a culturally divisive issue, jeopardizing any attempts to curb the spread of COVID-19. Of course this is America, the land of plenty, and so we are blessed with all of these calamities and more besides to contend with. So much to fix, and so little time to do it, it's hard to know where to start. But we can't even start, because Trump is actively standing in our way.

Do you approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as President?

 Overall: 38%

Republicans: 91%

Democrats: 2%

Independents: 33%

Republicans are still clearly in the thrall of the of the Trump cult, but 2/3 of independent along with 98% of Democrats don't approve of the job Donald Trump is doing! These are not only devastating numbers electorally on their own, they also represent a massive drop in approval in nearly every measure category. This recognition of the real horror of the Trump presidency, does nothing to excuse the incredible failings of Joe Biden and the Democrats, who instead of seizing the opportunity for substantive change and a positive future vision, have decided to step back and allow Trump to destroy himself with his own incompetence. A profoundly cynical and dangerous ploy, that may in the end work for them, come November, but at the cost of sacrificing lives and spirits from their inaction. Into this vacuum we can step. If the Democratic party apparatus is foregoing a substantive policy platform, it is up to the people to make our demands heard louder than ever. Even if Joe Biden does win the presidency, securing any significant concessions will be a massive uphill effort, requiring a sustainable and growing movement, that keeps the focus and pressure on critical issues like universal healthcare, $15 min wage, Green New Deal, etc., from now until the election, and then twice as hard the day after! If we are to emerge from beyond COVID-19 as a nation not in ruin, but in rebirth, getting not just economic prosperity for all Americans, but the time to flourish as humans and create a more socially conscious society, it's going to take an enduring collective movement of commensurate size and power, to the forces of economic oppression and bigotry we face! To create that better future will require the stamina to outlast the powers that be, and convince them that there is no choice but to change or lose everything. Don’t miss this chance as the gears of history are turning quickly to change our country for the better, join us every Tuesday, in growing solidarity and power until we take back our democracy from amoral special interests, and greedy politicians: Don't Shop on Tuesdays!
